“to be free is not to have the power to do anything you like; it is to be able to surpass the given toward an open future”
- Simone de Beauvoir
the stars above us:
mars has moved into it’s fiery domicile of aries and there is actual debate on twitter as to whether or not that’s a good thing. in regards to mars it’s a pretty fair question. generally speaking, a dignified planet has an easier time making whatever moves it must make. the lesser malefic, god of war & severance, is home with his favorite flames and weaponry. are we declaring this a happy turn of events?
for me that answer is a resounding yes. i’m a night chart so mars is my malefic of sect, we know each other well. my natal mars is angular and enclosed by the benefics so sometimes mars transits end up being more beneficial to me than jupiter transits. stars can be funny like that.
still, mars is a malefic and his transits do reliably bring strife for all; accidents, injury, discord. that’s the job and the majority of it is entirely impersonal and necessary for the proper functioning of the sublunar realm.
to be in a human body for an earthly incarnation you agree to the rules of engagement here; everything must be born and everything that lives must one day die. in the loosest, widest terms imaginable- the malefics are responsible for the corrosive part of this paradigm (death, decay) where the benefics are tasked with generation (birth, creation).
a wildly proliferating, unchecked jupiter could be a habitat being overtaken by an invasive species, a cancerous growth. in this case, mars or saturn would be entering the scene as the Hero Who Was Promised, the one with the (malefic) ability to restrict, stop the overreach and restore balance to the whole.
just like on earth, the objective “good” in the skies is not always a blessing and the “bad” is not always a deathblow. now that we have established some necessary nuance, let’s dig into one of my FAVORITE pairings in the sky
venus in taurus & mars in aries
ominous warnings aside- mars in aries and venus in taurus belong together, they really do. the unstable, cardinal spark of aries finds a hearth and fuel for it’s flames in taurus. aries is spirit + taurus is form and when they come together you have LIFE.
martial challenges backed with venusian resources look a lot more like adventure than hardship; someone living in the woods because they have no home/no choice vs someone living in the woods because it’s been a life long dream to test their survivalist skills and build a cozy little hobbit hole to live in JUST BECAUSE. that is fixed venus fueling cardinal mars as god intended. that is where the possibilities become vast and endless and the future wide open.
two big moments to keep an eye out for:
the mars/north node conjunction on 5/19/24. the mars/north node cycle is one of ambition, obsession, disruption, power struggles, energy + will. this is the north node’s ruthless magnetism being unleashed on a martian agenda. with mars now in domicile and ruling them both, there’s nothing to dilute this mission or second guess any questionable claims to power. last week we talked about the necessity of clear, clean motives thru this transit and this is where they get tested aka the fun part
the benefic conjunction on 5/23/24. the venus/jupiter cycle is one of expansion, prosperity, indulgence, success & unchecked growth. with both benefics under venusian rule there’s no one to moderate/balance her appetites (currently swelling thanks to jupiter’s “generosity”). overconsumption is the biggest warning to look out for here. lovesick, lethargic, unproductive & mulish - an overindulged venus is never fun for anyone involved.
future lore:
what manifests between mars and the north node over the next month will have a lot to do with whatever the eclipses have brought forth in the aries sector of your life. the north node is fed thru experience and mars is experienced thru action. if any sudden, fated feeling challenges/bets/dares/gauntlets show up in the house aries rules for you i’d think twice before refusing the call. give destiny the dance she’s looking for, the north node will not be easily denied here.
for the (potential) benefic overdose being threatened in taurus, i give you the words of the wise & venerable Rob Hand-
“easy transits are easy primarily in that they are not unpleasant and do not require any special outpouring of energy. but they may reinforce your weak points, simply because they denote periods of equilibrium and ease in which you tend to continue in whatever direction you have been taking.
the significant challenge of these transits is to find your own weak spots and then change them voluntarily. but the usual reaction is to do nothing, because nothing cries out to be done. as a result, these transits can do even more damage than the so-called difficult ones, although that is not usually apparent until the next difficult transit of that house”
taurus has been thru a lot in the last three years between eclipses and those villainous saturn/uranus squares so a moment of peace and plenty is most likely overdue. especially in relationships, the benefics can help soothe and sweeten any bonds that have become strained under all that pressure. but if a new direction is needed and you are resistant to the changes prescribed? these two are not terrific motivators.
when venus & jupiter join forces, they are able to create comfort and the appearance of “good” in some pretty suspect life conditions. put simply-if you’re in a rut, don’t let the benefics talk you into decorating it. far better to let mars bully you out of it with discomfort and unease (malefic medicine ftw!) and THEN set the benefics loose on beautifying your fresh start.
no matter what, these are riotous + joyful skies to be thoroughly enjoyed and preferably experienced in the company of your favorite humans/partners in crime. life is for living, right? RIGHT.
until next week,
